At the fishing village of Afytos, built at the area of ancient Afyti, died, according to the legend, the king of Sparta, Agisilaos
and he was embalmed with the famous honey of Kassandra. It was inhabited since the prehistorical times and people from Eretreia
settled there in the 16th BC century. The city became very important, took active part in the Persian Wars and later it became
member of the Athenian Alliance. In BC 348 it was ruined by Philip the Second but was rebuilt. It was flourishing in the Roman
Times while the famous temple of "Amonas" Zeus was lying there. In the 17th century it had a flourishing economy.
In 1821 it was ruined by the Turks and rebuilt after 1827. Afytos lies 48km south of Polygyros.
